Aam Panna

Aam Panna is a very refreshing drink made with Raw mangoes, fresh mint, sugar, black salt and roasted cumin powder for this scorching summer heat. Summers are incomplete without the mention of mangoes which can be used for making various recipes.In Odisha, the Summer has knocked our door and the heat is unbearable. The temperature in May and June reaches a scorching 46 to 47 degree Celsius and with the heat waves accompanying the high temperature, it is even worse in western part of Odisha.

To beat this heat, we make nutritious coolers from seasonal fruits such as mangoes, watermelons, pineapple etc. These fruits keeps us hydrated, our bodies cooler and even immune us from the scorching heat. Aam panna or Amba Pana as we call in Odisha is one such refreshing drink which I make in the months of summer to beat the summer heat.

Aam Pana is a refreshing desi summer drink made of mango pulp blended with roasted cumin powder, mint leaves and sweetened with sugar or jaggery. If made with jaggery, grate the jaggey or use powdered jaggery so that it blends easily in the Panna .

This Aam Panna recipe is a quick recipe without boiling the mango as made in the traditional way. The traditional way requires you to boil the mangoes , cool it and then make a pulp out of it, whereas by this easy and quick method , you can get the same flavor without cooking it. So you can make this at the comfort of your home, without going out in the heat to have this one.

Ingredients for Aam Panna:

  • 250 gms Raw Mango/1 no
  • 1/4th cup jaggery/sugar
  • 1/2 cup water to make the sugar syrup
  • 1 Tsp roasted cumin powder
  • 1 tsp black salt
  • 1/4 the cup fresh mint leaves
  • Ice cubes and chilled water

Let’s Learn How to make it:

  • Wash , peel and grate the raw mango and transfer to a blender.
  • Make the sugar syrup with 1/4 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water and let it cool completely. Alternatively you can add powdered or liquid jaggery.
  • Once the sugar syrup has cooled down, make the Mango puree with roasted cumin powder, black salt and mint leaves and transfer to a jar. Check the seasoning and adjust accordingly,
  • To serve, add 2 to 3 tbsp of mango puree, sugar syrup, ice cubes in a glass and pour chilled water and beat the summer heat.
